Volleyball splits on opening day of Austin College Tournament

Sherman, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team won one match and lost another on the opening day of the Austin College Tournament Friday afternoon in Sherman. The Cru opened the day with a three-set victory over Texas College before falling to tournament host Austin College in the final match of the day. UMHB moves to 3-6 on the season with the split.
            UMHB controlled the opening match early and then rolled to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-13 over Texas College. Kaydie Cochran led the Cru with eight kills and Kimberly Smidovec and Morgan Baker added seven more kills apiece. Erin Maenius had a team-high 26 digs and Alexis Tharp and Anissa Garcia both reached double figures in assists with 17 and 12 respectively.

            The Cru could not recover from an early deficit in a 25-22, 25-15, 25-11 loss to Austin College in the day's finale. Smidovec topped the team with seven kills and she added six digs. Maenius had 14 digs, Tharp added eight assists and Garcia had nine assists and 10 digs for UMHB.

            UMHB will close out the tournament with two more matches tomorrow. The Cru will open the day with a 10:00 AM match against Southern University of New Orleans before closing out the action with a 2:00 PM start against Mid-America Christian University. UMHB will then return home to host Huston-Tillotson in a 6:00 PM start next Tuesday.
