Belton, TX – On an extremely hot and sticky afternoon, The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team defeated Austin College 2-0 to improve to three wins and no losses on the season. UMHB took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute on a goal from Derek Geels and a rocket off the right foot of Bo Baker found the back of the net on a free kick to take a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute. The loss for Austin College takes them to 1-2-1 on the season.
The two teams were knotted up 0-0 into the second half. Austin College had 5 shots on goal in the 1st half, and UMHB had 6. Ten minutes into the 2nd half, the CRU began a relentless attack that led to an opportunity for a strike from Derek Geels at the top of the box that buried in the back of the net. The CRU claimed a 1-0 lead and never looked back. In the 78th minute, after an Austin College foul, Bo Baker took the free kick and blasted a low shot toward a Kangaroo defender that ricocheted off a defender's leg and just past the outstretched hands of a diving Grant Gosselin in goal for Austin College.
The shot margin the the 2nd half was similar to the first with 8 shots for the CRU and 7 shots for the Kangaroos. Mark Miller had 2 saves in the 2nd half and 7 for the game. The win gives Miller his third straight shutout for the season.
There were 18 total fouls in the match and one yellow card issued for each team. The heat and humidity caused both coaches to sub their players often throughout the match.
UMHB will return to action with an American Southwest Conference game against LeTourneau on the road in Longview. That match is set for September 17th at 4:00pm.
