Volleyball falls to ETBU in five sets

Marshall, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team fought back from a pair of deficits, but the Cru could not finish off the victory in a five-set loss to East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon in Marshall. The Cru falls to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in American Southwest Conference with the loss. ETBU improves to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the ASC with the victory.
            ETBU won the first and third sets with the Cru fighting back each time, but the Tigers were too much in the fifth set and held on for a 25-22, 23-25, 25-12, 15-25, 15-7 victory. The Tigers hit .171 as a team while the Cru hit just .117. UMHB did have seven service aces but also posted seven service errors.

            Tina Miller led UMHB with a match-high 27 kills and Kimberly Smidovec added nine. Erin Maenius had a team-best 41 digs and Anissa Garcia chipped in 30 assist and a pair of service aces. Kaydie Cochran added five service aces for UMHB. Amy Wooten topped ETBU with 20 kills and Kerri Kalina added 16 more. Nicole Vanderlaan recorded 33 digs and Breann Whitaker topped ETBU with 52 assists.

            The Cru will hit the road again next week for the first ASC Dig Pink Cross-Over Challenge of the season. Mississippi College will host that tournament as UMHB will play three matches against ASC West Division teams.
