Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team took a little while to get the offense going, but the Cru posted a pair of second half goals to take a 2-0 victory over Southwestern University in the 2010 season opener Friday in Belton. UMHB is now 1-0 to start the season. The loss drops the Pirates to 1-1 on the year.
The two teams were scoreless through the first half and combined for just 10 shots in the period. UMHB would break through early in the second half. Trevor Shoppach scored off an assist from Scott Poole to make it 1-0 just 2:54 into the second half. It would stay that way deep into the second half as Cru goalkeeper Mark Miller made several spectacular saves. UMHB would add some insurance when Bo Baker scored off assists from Vincent Morales and Shoppach with just 2:55 remaining to give the Cru the 2-0 edge. That would be more than enough as the Cru defense shut down the Pirates the rest of the way.

Miller finished with seven saves in goal and he posted his 12th shutout in the past two seasons. Nick Pierce and Daniel Poole combined for two saves for Southwestern. UMHB was outshot 12-3 in the second half and 17-8 for the match.

The Cru will return to action with a 5:00 PM start against Trinity University tomorrow at the Cru Sports Plex. The matches are part of the ASC-SCAC Challenge. Southwestern will face U.T.-Tyler in a 3:00 PM start to open Saturday's action. Trinity will then face U.T.-Tyler in a 4:00 PM start on Sunday to close out the weekend.
