Women's basketball falls to Concordia 66-62

Austin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team could not overcome an 18-2 run to start the second half and Concordia Texas iced the game from the free-throw line in the final seconds to post a 66-62 victory over the Cru Monday night in Austin. The UMHB women lose for the fourth time in the last six games and drop to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in American Southwest Conference play. The Tornados improve to 6-6 overall and 5-4 in the ASC with the victory. UMHB and Concordia are also now tied with Howard Payne for third place in the ASC West Division.
            The Cru took its first lead of the game at 7-4 and never trailed again in the first half, building a 29-23 edge at halftime. Concordia stormed out in the second half, opening the period with an 18-2 run to take a double-digit lead at 41-31. UMHB then fought back with a run of its own and took a 51-50 lead when Brittany Zamora drilled a three-pointer and added a free-throw with 6:43 remaining. Concordia would retake the lead after going on a 10-1 run to make it 60-52 but the Cru once again clawed its way back into the game. Caitlin Barganier drilled a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to pull UMHB to within 64-62, but Margaret Milling iced the game with a pair of free-throws with 6.2 seconds to go to put the game out of reach.
            Zamora led UMHB with 12 points and she added six rebounds and five assists. Lindsay Eaton had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Cru. Stacie Stephens, Barganier and Jenny Black all chipped in eight points apiece. The Cru turned the ball over 28 times against Concordia's full-court pressure and UMHB was out rebounded 39-32. The Cru shot 38 percent from the field and went 10-25 from three-point range.
            Alex O'Neal topped Concordia with 16 points and Lashonda Luckey added 14 despite playing much of the second half with four fouls. Tiesha Martin also reached double figures with 11 points and she grabbed seven boards. Concordia shot 39 percent from the field and went 15-25 from the free-throw line. The Tornados also turned the ball over 25 times.
            UMHB will now return home to host Schreiner University for a 5:30 PM tip-off Thursday night at the Mayborn Campus Center. The Cru will then close out a stretch of six games in 13 days with a 1:00 PM start at Texas Lutheran University Saturday in Seguin.
