Seguin, TX – The women's basketball team stormed back from a double-digit second half to lead to tie the game in the final seconds, but a pair of Texas Lutheran free-throws with 0.6 seconds left made the difference as the Bulldogs won 67-65 over the Cru Saturday afternoon in Seguin. The loss drops UMHB to 9-6 overall and 6-5 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Cru's last four games have now been decided by a total of nine points. Texas Lutheran improves to 5-9 overall and 4-6 in the ASC on the season with the victory.
After the Cru cut the TLU lead to three points twice early in the second half, the Bulldogs stretched it out to a 10-point edge at 46-36 with 12:53 remaining.
Stacie Stephens buried a three-pointer and added the and-one to pull UMHB to within two points at 51-49 with 6:27 on the clock. The Bulldogs pushed it back to six points and after Kim Hagan hit one of two free-throws with 12 seconds left had a 65-62 lead.
Lauren Reece raced down the floor and buried a three for UMHB to tie the game at 65 with seven seconds to go. TLU quickly pushed the ball down the floor and Lynn Lumpkin-Boozer missed a lay-up at the buzzer. UMHB's
Landie Thompson was called for a foul. After a short discussion, the clock was reset to 0.6 seconds and Lumpkin-Boozer drained both free throws to make it a 67-65 TLU lead. UMHB would not get off a shot on the last possession as the Bulldogs held on for the victory. UMHB trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before a late run cut it to 34-29 at the break.
Lindsay Eaton led the Cru with 18 points and six rebounds. Reece added 13 points and Stephens had 12 points, all of them in the second half. Thompson also reached double figures with 10 points for UMHB. The Cru played without starting guard
Brittany Zamora, who missed the game with an illness.
Tamisha Timpson had a huge game for TLU, finishing with 19 points and Rebecca Valdez added 18 before fouling out on Stephens' four-point play. Lumpkin-Boozer added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
TLU out rebounded the Cru 45-25 and shot 47 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs were 14-21 from the free-throw line while the Cru hit 14-15 from the stripe. UMHB shot 38 percent from the field and went 7-25 from three-point range.
The Cru women will now return home for a pair of crucial ASC West Division showdowns next week. UMHB will host Hardin-Simmons University for a 5:30 PM tip-off on Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM start against McMurry University on Saturday.
