Alpine, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team gave up with some last second magic of its own just two days after losing in the final seconds and the Cru held on for a 68-67 victory over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Alpine. The UMHB men improve to 15-4 overall and 11-4 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Lobos fall to 8-11 overall and 7-8 in the ASC on the year with the loss.
The Cru saw a second-half lead disappear and Sul Ross State would lead by seven points at 62-55 with 3:16 remaining in the game. UMHB would still trail 65-60 with two minutes to go before
Kitrick Bell hit back-to-back baskets to pull the Cru to within one at 65-64 with 1:18 on the clock. Percy Settles' jumper with 1:03 left put the Lobos on top 67-64 before
Marlon Miller took over for UMHB. Miller hit a jumper to cut the lead to 67-66 with 50 seconds left. The Lobos would miss a shot with 19 seconds to go and Miller buried the game-winner on a jump shot with three seconds left to give the Cru the victory. Sul Ross would not get off a shot on the last possession. UMHB would lead 33-31 at halftime before scoring the first five points of the second half to open up a seven-point lead.
Miller led UMHB with 22 points and he hit 10-14 shots from the field. Bell added 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench and
Robert Moore chipped in 10 points and nine boards for the Cru.
Jimmy Martinez topped five players in double figures with 17 points for the Lobos. Settle added 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Sul Ross and Travis Johnson and Justin Weldon also had 12 points apiece.
UMHB shot 50 percent from the field and went 4-9 from three-point range. The Lobos shot 40 percent from the field and the Cru won the rebounding battle 40-31 in the victory.
The Cru will now return home to face the same two teams the UMHB men just played in rematches next week. UMHB will host Howard Payne University for a 7:30 PM tip-off on Thursday night before closing out the week with a 3:00 PM start against Sul Ross State next Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
