Women's basketball beats Concordia 60-51

Belton, TX – On a night that neither team could shoot the ball, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team found enough offense down the stretch to post a 60-51 victory over Concordia Texas Monday night in Belton. The Cru women snapped a two-game winning streak and won for the first time since December 11th to improve to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The loss drops the Tornados to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the ASC on the year.
            The two teams both shot 28 percent in a sluggish first-half. The Cru finally made a late run to take a 22-15 halftime lead. Concordia battled back from an early eight-point deficit to tie the game at 30 with 11:05 left to play. The Cru scored the next eight points to open it up before the Tornados made another run. Concordia pulled to within 48-45 on Margaret Milling's three-point play with 1:27 remaining. UMHB would answer with a Lindsay Eaton lay-up and two free throws apiece from Brittany Zamora and Caitlin Barganier to make it a seven-point game. Concordia cut it to 54-51 with 19 seconds left, but the Cru hit six clutch free-throws down the stretch and held the Tornados off the board to hold on for the win.
            Eaton topped UMHB with 19 points and 11 rebounds and she hit 7-12 from the field. Zamora added 10 points and six rebounds. Eight different players scored for the Cru. UMHB shot just 32 percent from the field and went 3-17 from three-point range. The Cru did hit 23-27 from the free-throw line.
            Shamika Singleton led Concordia with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. No other player was in double figures for the Tornados. Concordia shot 36 percent from the field and went 0-5 from three-point range. The Tornados were 13-24 from the free-throw line.
                UMHB will continue its homestand with games against University of the Ozarks and U.T.-Dallas later this week. The Cru will host Ozarks for a 5:30 PM tip-off on Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM start against U.T.-Dallas on Saturday.
