Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team took control of the game at the start of the second half and the Cru went on to a 68-57 victory over the University of the Ozarks Thursday night in Belton. The UMHB men improve to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Eagles drop to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in the ASC on the season with the loss.
The Cru opened up an early 12-point lead at 21-9 before Ozarks clawed back to tie the game at halftime 31-31. UMHB then opened the second half with an 11-0 run, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first 3:16. The Cru would lead by as many as 15 points before Ozarks started to chip away again. The Eagles cut the lead to 60-53 with 5:26 remaining, but UMHB scored the game's next four points to take the lead back to double digits and the Cru was not threatened the rest of the way.
Robert Moore led a balanced UMHB scoring attack with 12 points on 4-7 shooting.
Brian Todd added nine points as six players scored seven or more points for the Cru. A total of 11 players scored for UMHB overall.
Kevin Neal had eight points, six steals and a pair of blocked shots for the UMHB men. The Cru shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and hit 49 percent overall. UMHB was just 11-22 from the free-throw line and 1-8 from three-point range.
Marcus Bobb topped Ozarks with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Andrew Williams also scored 16 for the Eagles, but no other player had more than seven points. Ozarks shot just 32 percent from the field and went 5-19 from three-point range. The Eagles did hit 16-20 from the free-throw line and out rebounded UMHB 39-37 in the game.
The UMHB men will wrap up their home stand with a 3:00 PM tip-off against U.T.-Dallas on Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center. The Cru will then travel to Austin to take on Concordia Texas in a 7:30 PM start next Monday night.
