Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team erased a ten-point deficit, dominated the final three quarters an re-established itself as the pre-eminent program in the American Southwest Conference as the Cru rolled to a 36-10 victory over 19
th-ranked Louisiana College Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB, ranked fourth in the country in both major polls, improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the ASC with the win. The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the ASC on the year.
Louisiana College would take a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The Wildcats took the opening drive and went 61 yards in 13 plays before the Cru defense stiffened and held LC to Adan Olivares' 24-yard field goal. UMHB would throw an interception, leading to a four-play, 42-yard drive, capped by Ryan Montague's two-yard scoring run to make it 10-0 Wildcats with 1:59 left in the first quarter. That's when UHB took over. The Cru defense started forcing three-and-outs and the UMHB offense used
LiDarral Bailey's 10-yard TD run to cut it to 10-7 with 5:26 left in the first half.
Darius Wilson would score on a 10-yard run of his own with 3:01 left in the second to give the Cru a 14-10 lead and
Chad Peevey hit a 33-yard field goal with 54 seconds left in the half to make it 17-10 UMHB at the break.
Peevey would hit a 40-yard field goal early in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 20-10.
Elijah Hudson blasted through the Wildcat defense for a 43-yard scoring run to make it 26-10 UMHB with 54 seconds left in the third. Peevey would add a 31-yard field goal with 7:00 left in the game and
Cody Jones put the exclamation point on the win with a 66-yard interception return for a score with 56 seconds remaining.
The Cru exploded for 384 rushing yards against a Wildcat defense that had only allowed 165 combined rushing yards through its first three games. UMHB finished with 507 yards of total offense in the win. LC was held to just 56 rushing yards and 331 yards of total offense. The Wildcats rolled up 129 of those yards in the first quarter. The Cru also intercepted three passes in the game.
UMHB had three rushers top the 100-yard mark, with Wilson rolling up 171 on 25 carries to lead the way. Bailey added 110 on 19 carries and Hudson finished with 103 yards on 13 totes. Bailey was also 12-23 passing for 123 yards with
Damian Davis catching five passes for 63 yards.
Javicz Jones had 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks to lead the Cru defense.
Jamie Bunting was just 15-37 passing for 193 yards for the Wildcats. Dayne Reeves caught eight passes for 121 yards. Montague was held to 36 yards on nine carries after rolling up 200 yards on the ground last week. Richard Logan and Peter Ford had 11 tackles apiece for Louisiana College.
The Cru will now travel to Clinton, Mississippi for a 6:00 PM kickoff at Mississippi College next Saturday. Louisiana College returns home to host East Texas Baptist next Saturday.
