Huntsville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team kept it close in the early going, but eventually did not have an answer for Sam Houston State's size in an 87-53 loss to the Division I Bearkats Friday afternoon in Huntsville. The loss drops the Cru women to 0-1 to start the season. Sam Houston State improves to 2-0 on the year with the victory.
UMHB opened the game with a 7-2 run and would lead 13-10 with 13 minutes left in the first half. Sam Houston State scored the game's next nine points to take the lead for good and the Bearkats would build a 35-23 edge by halftime. Sam Houston State would stretch it out in the second half with hot shooting from the field and a huge advantage from the free throw line. The Cru would not get closer than 10 points the rest of the way with the Bearkats posting their largest lead of the day on the game's final score.
Jovana Miles led UMHB with 12 points and she hit 6-11 from the field.
Gabby Guzman added 11 points and a team-best five rebounds in her debut for the Cru.
Lauren Reece had seven assists and 11 different players scored for UMHB.
Sequeena Thomas led Sam Houston State with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Britni Martin added 16 points and 10 assists and Angela Beadle chipped in 13 points and nine boards.
The Cru shot 38 percent from the field in the game and went just 4-22 from three-point range. The Bearkats shot 53 percent for the game and went 16-21 from the free-throw line compared to 3-4 for UMHB. Sam Houston State outscored the Cru 44-22 in the paint. The Bearkats also out rebounded UMHB 40-29 and forced 20 Cru turnovers.
UMHB will return to action with a 5:30 PM tip-off at Southwestern University Next Tuesday in Georgetown. The Cru will then return to the Mayborn Campus Center for the 2011-12 home opener against Centenary College on Saturday, November 26
th.
