Men's Basketball rolls past Southwestern 82-56

Georgetown, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team took control of the game with a late first-half run and the Cru stretched it out in the second half on the way to an 82-56 victory over Southwestern University Tuesday night in Georgetown. UMHB is now 1-0 on the season following the victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 0-4 on the year.
 
Southwestern grabbed an early 14-8 lead and would hold a 20-19 lead with 10:53 left in the first half. The Cru answered with a 20-3 run to open up a 39-23 lead with 4:01 remaining in the first half. UMHB would lead 44-30 at halftime and would not let the Pirates get closer than nine points the rest of the way. The lead would grow to as many as 28 points in the second half before the Cru cruised to the 26-point win.
 
Sterling Phillips and Marlon Miller led UMHB with 15 points apiece and the duo combined to hit 14-25 from the field. Thomas Orr added 13 points and Kitrick Bell came off the bench to score 11 points and pull down a team-best eight rebounds.
 
Logan Hurley was the only Southwestern player to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points. Hurley and Carson Severson grabbed five rebounds each to lead the Pirates.
 
UMHB shot 49 percent from the field and held the Pirates to just 27 percent shooting. The Cru also out rebounded Southwestern 48-40 and forced 15 turnovers while giving the ball away just nine times.
 
The Cru will now return home to host Centenary College in the 2011-12 home opener Saturday. That game will start at 7:30 PM as the second half of a women's-men's doubleheader at the Mayborn Campus Center. UMHB will then open American Southwest Conference play with a 7:30 PM tip-off against East Texas Baptist University on Monday at the Mayborn Center.
