Georgetown, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team started strong but could not overcome a late first-half cold spell as the Cru's comeback bid fell short in an 83-73 loss to Southwestern University Tuesday evening in Georgetown. The loss drops the UMHB women to 0-2 on the season. The Pirates improve to 3-0 on the year with the victory.
The Cru scored the game's first four points and jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead. UMHB would lead 15-8 with 12:39 left in the first half. Southwestern would then go on a 10-0 run to take the lead. The Cru fought back to tie the game at 18, but the Pirates used another run to take a 38-27 halftime lead. The lead would grow to 14 points early in the second half before UMHB started to claw back. Andre'a Davis hit a lay-up to tie the game at 55 with 8:39 left to play. There would be three more ties before Southwestern finally put the game out of reach with an 8-0 run. The Cru would not get closer than six points the rest of the way.
Brittany Zamora led UMHB with 19 points and she hit 4-9 from three-point range.
Jovana Miles added a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Lauren Reece added 10 points off the bench for the Cru.
Anna Fareed and Chelsea Leeder topped Southwestern with a game-high 23 points apiece. Jordan Owens chipped in with 16 points and Annie Bourne had 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
UMHB shot 37 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range. Southwestern shot 46 percent from the field and hit 47 percent from beyond the arc. The Pirates also made as many free-throws as the Cru attempted. UMHB turned the ball over 28 times while forcing 24 Southwestern turnovers in the game.
The Cru women will now return home to host Centenary College in the 2011-12 home opener on Saturday. The start time for that game has been pushed back to 5:30 PM from the originally scheduled start time of 1:00 PM. UMHB will then open American Southwest Conference play with a 5:30 PM start against East Texas Baptist on Monday, November 28
th, at the Mayborn Campus Center.
