Belton, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team closed the first half with a 20-2 run to take control of the game and the Cru never looked back in a 93-57 win over Centenary College Saturday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 2-0 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Gents to 0-2 on the year.
The two teams traded the lead back and forth in the first half before Centenary took a 27-22 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half. The Cru would score 20 of the final 22 points of the half, taking the lead for good on a
Sterling Phillips steal and lay-up with 3:15 left before the break. UMHB would lead 42-29 at halftime and then stretched the lead in the second half.
Cory Meals hit a three-pointer with 13:10 on the clock to put the Cru up by 30 at 63-33 and UMHB simply coasted to the win from there.
Phillips led the Cru with 17 points,
Thomas Orr added 12 and
Kitrick Bell chipped in with 11 off the bench.
Greg Wiernas grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for UMHB and 12 different players scored for the Cru in the win.
Maxx Nakwaasah erupted for 34 points to lead the Gents and he hit 11-22 from the field and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Only two other players scored more than two points for Centenary in the game.
The Cru shot 52 percent from the field and went 9-22 from three-point range. UMHB out rebounded Centenary 48-31 in the game and held the Gents to 31 percent shooting from the field.
The Cru will continue its home stand with the American Southwest Conference opener against East Texas Baptist University on Monday. UMHB will take on the Tigers in a 7:30 PM start at the Mayborn Campus Center as the second half of a women's-men's doubleheader.
