Belton, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team dominated the second half as the Cru rolled to a 68-57 victory over Centenary College in the 2011-12 home opener Saturday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 1-2 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Ladies to 0-3 on the year.
The Cru built an early 10-6 lead before Centenary stormed back to take a 35-26 halftime lead. UMHB scored the first six points of the second half before the Ladies stretched the lead back to nine points at 43-34 with 15:07 left in the game. The Ladies would hold a 49-41 lead with 11:27 to go, but The Cru used an 8-0 run to tie the game. UMHB would take the lead on a
Lauren Reece lay-up and
Jovana Miles jumper with 5:34 on the clock. The Cru quickly pushed the lead to double figures and then held on for the win.
Brandy Dittert led UMHB with 15 points off the bench and Miles finished with 14 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Eleven different players scored in the game for the Cru.
Jalena Sanders had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Centenary. Dio Warr added 15 points off the bench and Vashni Sharp-Moore grabbed 10 rebounds for the Ladies.
UMHB shot 37 percent from the field and out rebounded the Ladies 51-39 in the game. The Cru shot 3-17 from three-point range. Centenary hit 37 percent from the field but went just 7-25 in the second half.
The Cru women will continue their home stand with the American Southwest Conference opener against East Texas Baptist University on Monday. UMHB will take on the Tigers in a 5:30 PM start at the Mayborn Campus Center in the opening game of a women's-men's doubleheader.
