Richardson, TX – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team fought back from an opening set loss to tie the match, but the Cru comeback fell short in a 3-1 loss to U.T.-Tyler in an American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament elimination match on Friday. The loss ends UMHB's season at 21-11 overall. The Patriots improve to 21-10 overall and advance to face either U.T.-Dallas or Texas Lutheran in another elimination match tonight at 7:30 PM.
UMHB fell behind after set one before battling back to win the second set. The Patriots then held off late UMHB rallies in the third and fourth sets for a 25-9, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22 victory. UTT dominated the opening set, jumping out to a 14-3 lead and the Cru could not recover. UMHB bounced back in the second set, breaking open a tight set with three straight points to snap a 20-20 tie. The Cru fell behind 16-9 in the third set before cutting the lead to 21-18. The Patriots would win four of the next six points to close out the set. UMHB would build a 13-8 lead in set #4 and kept it close the rest of the way before UT-Tyler won three of the last four points to end it.
UMHB hit just .132 as a team and committed 29 attack errors in the match. The Cru also recorded just 3.0 team blocks.
Sophia Alexiou had a team-best 14 kills and
Morgan Baker added 10 more for UMHB.
Anissa Garcia had 46 assists and four UMHB players reached double figures in digs.
Elise Butler led the way with 16 digs, Baker added 15,
Jasmine Austin posted 11 and
Kaydie Cochran finished with 10 digs.
The Patriots hit .295 as a team and had 9.0 team blocks. Madison Kosir posted 19 kills and added 15 assists. Danika Waldrep had 14 kills and 13 digs and Breanna Brummett added 15 kills. Emily Wood led U.T.-Tyler with 23 digs.
The match eliminated the Cru from the conference tournament after UMHB advanced to the ASC Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Cru also set a new school single-season record for wins in the Division III era with 21 this season. The loss also closes out the playing careers of UMHB seniors
