Tyler, TX- For the second straight match, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team had its fate decided on penalty kicks. Only this time, the Cru came up just short as the University of Texas at Tyler advanced 4-1 on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Saturday in Tyler.

The two teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtimes, sending the match to a shootout. U.T.-Tyler would have first shot Victor Almendariz converted the opening shot. Patriot goalkeeper Sergio Gardea would come up with a save on Trevor Shoppach's attempt for the Cru. Elijah Shipman and Derek Geels then both connected to give UT-Tyler a 2-1 edge. The Patriots would also convert their third attempt before UMHB's Kyle Dickey was stopped by Gardea. Enoch Shipman then ended the match with a shot that just slipped past Cru goal keeper Adam Cecil.

The Patriots took a first-half lead when Chris Powell scored off an assist from Justin Nesmith at the 30:45 mark. It would stay that way into the second half before Chris Torres knocked home a rebound off an assist from Isaiah Minick in the 61st minute to tie the match. The Patriots had several good chances to end it, but Cecil came up with clutch saves for the Cru to keep the match alive.

The Patriots had 26 total shots while the Cru had eight. Cecil contributed 10 total saves for UMHB. Gardea finished with two saves in addition to the crucial stops he recorded in the shootout.

The Cru finishes the season with an 11-4-3 record. UMHB also advanced to the semifinals of the ASC Tournament for the third straight season. The match closes out the UMHB playing career for the following seniors: Cecil, Shoppach, Devon Utley, Garrett Graham, Dickey, Logan Nance, and Colton Carlisle
