Longview, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team gave up the first two points of the game, but the Cru exploded for 24 of the next 28 and never looked back on the way to a 68-59 victory over LeTourneau University Thursday night in Longview. The 15
th-ranked UMHB men improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to overall and in ASC play on the year.
LeTourneau grabbed a quick 2-0 lead before UMHB took over. The Cru scored the game's next 12 points and used a 24-4 run to open up a 24-6 lead midway through the first half. The Yellow Jackets would not go away, pulling back to within nine points at 30-21 at halftime. LeTourneau cut the lead to four points early in the second half before UMHB was able to push it back to as many as 17 points. A Luke Taylor, Jr. three-pointer pulled the Yellow Jackets to within eight points with 2:37 left to play, but lay-ups from
James Allen and
Marlon Miller and a
Brian Todd free-throw helped the Cru open up a 13-point edge and the Yellow Jackets would not get closer than the final margin the rest of the way.
Miller finished with 18 points to lead UMHB and Todd joined him in double figures with 11.
Greg Wiernas pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Kendrae Carter topped LeTourneau with 19 points. Taylor finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
UMHB shot 37 percent from the field and turned the ball over just ten times. LeTourneau shot 35 percent and committed 20 turnovers. The Yellow Jackets did win the rebounding battle, pulling down 46 boards, compared to 41 for UMHB.
The Cru will return to action with a 3:00 PM start at U.T.-Tyler on Saturday. UMHB will then take a week off for finals before opening ASC West Division play at Concordia Texas on Saturday, December 10
th.
