Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team took control of both games early and the Cru rolled to a doubleheader sweep of U.T.-Dallas Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB won game one 7-1 and took game two by a 9-4 score. The Cru improves to 5-3 on the season with the two victories. The Comets drop to 3-3 on the year with the two losses.
UMHB used a dominating pitching performance from
Hannah White and a four-run fifth inning to power a 7-1 game one victory. The Cru took a 1-0 lead when
Ashton Feight tripled and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the third inning. UMHB stretched it to 5-0 with a run-scoring error, a sacrifice fly and White's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. The Cru then added a pair of runs on RBI doubles from
Brittany Moreno and
Caitlin Bollier in the bottom of the sixth. White would take a no-hitter into the top of the fourth and she finished with a four-hit complete-game victory to improve to 2-2. White struck out five and walked just one. Heather Foust took the loss for UTD after giving up 11 hits, but zero earned runs in six innings. Feight had three hits for the Cru and White and
Megan Bohne added two hits apiece for UMHB.
The Cru would score three runs in the bottom of the first inning of game two and never looked back on the way to a 9-4 win. UMHB took advantage of four wild pitches, an error and two hits to put three runs on the board in the first. UTD cut it to 3-1 in the top of the second, but the Cru added a pair of runs on a bases loaded walk to Bollier and Bohne's run-scoring groundout in the bottom of the second. The Comets would close to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but the Cru put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Bollier doubled home the first run and
Kaysie Creech added a three run triple. The Comets would tack on a run in the top of the fifth, but that would be as close as UTD would get.
Ariel Kemmerer tossed a complete-game, seven-hitter for UMHB to even her record at 1-1 on the season. Alyssa Fincher took the loss for UTD to drop to 1-2 on the year. Creech had two hits and four RBI for UMHB. Caysie Norum had two of the Comets seven hits in the game.
The Cru will return to action with four games over two days at the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament next weekend in Farmers Branch. UMHB will take on University of the Ozarks and Mississippi College on Friday, March 4th. The Cru will then close out the weekend with games against LeTourneau University and East Texas Baptist University on Friday, March 5th.
