Softball sweeps Howard Payne in ASC West opener

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team rallied from a late deficit to win game two with a seventh-inning single as the Cru completed a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne University Friday afternoon in Belton. The Cru won game one 5-4 before posting a 7-6 victory in game two. UMHB improves to 9-7 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the sweep. Howard Payne falls to 2-14 overall and 0-2 in the ASC West with the two losses.
 
The Cru saw an early lead slip away before rallying with a two-run seventh inning for a 7-6 game two win. Laura Rodriguez gave UMHB a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. HPU tied the game in the top of the second but Hannah White's RBI single in the bottom of that frame gave the Cru a 2-1 edge. Caitlin Bollier added an RBI single in the bottom of the third to push it to 3-1 before the Yellow Jackets tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Rodriguez added another RBI single and Lindsey Gordon scored on a throwing error to make it 5-3 UMHB in the bottom of the fourth. HPU scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. White tied the game with an RBI single and Kaysie Creech ended it with a two-run, game-winning RBI single. White was 4-5 for the Cru and Bollier added three hits. Erica White earned the win for UMHB in relief to raise her record to 4-0.
 
UMHB grabbed an early lead and then held off a late Howard Payne rally for a 5-4 win in game one. Jordan Schrutka's two-run single in the bottom of the first made it 2-0 UMHB. The Cru stretched it to 4-0 on a two-run error in the bottom of the second. HPU put three on the board in the top of the third to cut the lead to 4-3. Caitlin Bollier gave the Cru an insurance run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth and that would prove to be the game-winner after Howard Payne scored another run in the top of the fifth. Erica White also picked up the win in game one. Bollier and Creech had two hits apiece for UMHB in the victory.
 
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Dee Dillon Field. The Cru will then travel to Louisiana next Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at Louisiana College.
