Baseball edges Arlington Baptist 6-5

Fort Worth, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead and then held off a furious eighth-inning rally as the Cru held on for a 6-5 victory over Arlington Baptist Tuesday night in Fort Worth. UMHB improves to 15-17 on the season with the win.
 
UMHB took a 1-0 lead on Chris Joshlin's RBI single in the top of the first inning. Reinaldo Araujo's RBI single and Jeremy Sapp's RBI groundout pushed the Cru lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning. UMHB added two more runs in the top of the fifth on Joshlin's RBI double and B.J. Hrinevich's RBI single. Tim Yan stole home on the front end of a double steal in the top of the seventh to give UMHB a 6-0 edge. The Patriots would then make a game of it with a five-run eighth inning. Arlington Baptist took advantage of four hits and three walks to cut the lead to 6-5 before Danny Horstman coaxed a flyout with runners on second and third to end the inning. The Patriots would put the tying run on first with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Garrett Kinney would throw the base-runner out trying to steal second base to end the game.
 
Kreece Cooper picked up his first collegiate victory for the Cru to move to 1-0. Cooper struck out five and scattered four hits over five innings of work. Horstman earned his second save of the year in closing out the victory. Joshlin had three hits and two RBI for UMHB and Hrinevich, Araujo, Ricky Brenek and Josh Fredrick had two hits apiece to lead a 14-hit Cru offensive attack.
 
The Cru will return to action with a 4:00 PM single game at U.T.-Arlington tomorrow. UMHB will then return home to host Howard Payne University for a key, three-game American Southwest Conference West Division series this weekend at Red Murff Field. The two teams will open that series with a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
