Alpine, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team broke open a tight game with a seven-run sixth inning and the Cru rolled to a 13-7 victory over Sul Ross State University in the regular season finale for both teams Friday afternoon in Alpine. UMHB ends the season with a 19-20 overall record and the Cru went 9-12 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. The Lobos ends the year at 15-21 overall and 7-14 in the ASC West Division.
UMHB took a 2-0 lead on
Seth Lynn's RBI single and
Reinaldo Araujo's RBI double in the top of the second. Sul Ross cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, but
Josh Fredrick's solo homer in the top of the third gave UMHB a 3-1 lead. The Lobos tied the game with single runs in the third and fifth before the Cru exploded for seven runs in the sixth.
Seth Mogavero's two-run homer opened the scoring,
Ricky Brenek singled home a run and
Zach Young added a two-run double with Brenek also coming around to score on the Sul Ross throw and Young scored on a passed ball to make it 10-3 UMHB. Araujo added a solo home run in the seventh and
Nick Crosswhite singled home two runs in the eighth to give the Cru a 13-3 lead. Sul Ross would score three in the eighth and one more in the ninth, but that's as close as the Lobos would get.
Cameron Arnett scattered six hits over six and a third innings, giving up just one earned run to raise his record to 4-3 on the season. Arnett struck out six and walked two. Four UMHB relievers combined to limit the Lobos to six hits over the final three and two-thirds innings. Young, Mogavero, Araujo and
Braden Embry had three hits apiece for UMHB and Fredrick, Crosswhite, Lynn and
Chris Joshlin added two hits each in a 21-hit Cru attack.
The Cru just missed claiming a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament, snapping a streak of four consecutive tournament appearances. Friday's game also closed out the playing careers of two UMHB seniors. Outfielders
Reinaldo Araujo and
Ricky Brenek both played their final games as members of the Cru on Friday.
