Seguin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team found just enough offense to go with a pair of solid pitching performances and the Cru won a pair of nail biters in a doubleheader sweep of Texas Lutheran University Friday in Seguin. UMHB won game one 1-0 and took game two 3-2 in 10 innings. UMHB moves to 21-9 overall and 14-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the two victories. The Bulldogs fall to 10-20 overall and 3-11 in the ASC West with the two losses.
The Cru made the most of a first-inning run as
Erica White's dominating pitching performance made it stand up in a 1-0 game one victory.
Kaysie Creech doubled with one out in the top of the first inning and moved to third base on a wild pitch. She then scored on
Hannah White's fielder's choice grounder. That would be the only run of the game, but that was more than enough for
Erica White. She would take a no-hitter into the third inning and finished with a complete-game, two-hit shutout.
Erica White struck out eight and walked three while raising her record to 10-1 on the season. She outdueled Megan Carmichael in the game. Carmichael scattered five hits and struck out four but fell to 5-9 on the season. Creech had three of the Cru's five hits in the game.
The Cru fought back from an early deficit and used a two-run 10
th inning to post a 3-2 win in game two. Texas Lutheran grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. It would stay that way into the sixth before
Hannah White tied the game with an RBI single. UMHB would leave the bases loaded in that inning and left runners on second and third in the top of the seventh as the game went to extra innings. The Cru would load the bases again in the top of the eighth but could not push across a run. The International Tiebreaker went into effect in the top of the tenth and both teams took advantage. UMHB would take a 2-1 lead when Creech scored on a wild pitch and
Ashton Feight stole home on the front end of a double steal to push the Cru lead to 3-1. TLU would cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the tenth when Sarah Carmichael singled home a run, but that's as close as it would get.
Erica White picked up the win in relief of
Ariel Kemmerer to push her record to 11-1. White allowed two hits in four and third innings and Kemmerer allowed just one hit through five and two-thirds.
Megan Bohne had three of the Cru's six hits and
Hannah White added two more in the victory.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Seguin. The Cru will then return home to host Hardin-Simmons University for a crucial four-game ASC West Division series next weekend at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
