Seguin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a dominating pitching performance to take game one but could not overcome five costly errors in a game two loss as the Cru settled for a doubleheader split with Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Seguin. UMHB won the first game 4-0 before falling 6-4 in the nightcap. The Cru moves to 22-10 overall and 15-1 in American Southwest Conference West Division play following the split. Texas Lutheran is 11-21 overall and 4-12 in the ASC after the split.
UMHB made the most of a four-run fourth inning and another outstanding pitching performance from
Erica White in a 4-0 game one win. The Cru finally broke open a pitcher's duel in the top of the fourth.
Caitlin Bollier singled home
Caitlin Wells to open the scoring.
Megan Bohne followed with a two-run double and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. That was more than enough for White. She tossed a complete-game, five-hitter to raise her record to 12-1 on the season. White struck out two and walked just one. Wells and Bohne had two hits apiece for the Cru in the win. Megan Carmichael took the loss for the Bulldogs to drop to 5-11 after giving up nine hits.
The defense let the Cru down in a 6-4 loss in game two as UMHB committed five errors. The Cru jumped out front with three runs in the top of the first inning. Bohne singled home the first two runs and came around to score on an error. TLU would score two of its own in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 3-2. Bollier's sacrifice fly in the top of the second made it 4-2 UMHB. The Bulldogs took advantage of two errors to score another run in the bottom of the second to close to within 4-3. TLU then scored three more in the bottom of the fifth. Brittany Upton's single scored the tying run and the other two runs scored on a throwing error. The Cru would then go down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
Ariel Kemmerer took the loss for UMHB to fall to 6-4 after giving up just three hits in four and a third innings. She did not allow an earned run. Five different players had hits for the Cru as Jordan Mundine pitched a complete-game, five-hitter for the Bulldogs to raise her record to 6-9 on the season.
The Cru will now return home to host Hardin-Simmons for a four-game ASC West Division series this weekend at Dee Dillon Field. The two teams will play 1:00 PM doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday. UMHB will enter that series with a two-game lead over the Cowgirls in the ASC West Division.
