Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will continue its season opening home stand when the Cru faces McMurry University in the 2011 American Southwest Conference opener for both teams Saturday night in Belton. UMHB will host the War Hawks for a 6:00 PM kickoff in what will be the 14
th all-time meeting between the two teams.
The Cru leads the all-time series with McMurry 10-2. UMHB has won 10 straight against the War Hawks and 21 consecutive regular season games at Tiger Field, but McMurry will storm into the game with the momentum of a 24-21 last second victory over Division I U.T.-San Antonio last weekend. That win, and the success McMurry had in a 43-31 loss to the Cru last season certainly has the attention of the UMHB head coach.
“They really got some good players and have turned things around under that coaching staff,” Cru head coach
Pete Fredenburg said. “We have some mistakes to fix after last week, but we think they are all fixable. We need to come out ready to play because it is going to be a real challenge on Saturday.”
UMHB jumped out to a 22-0 lead midway through the first quarter in last season's meeting. McMurry answered with 25 straight points to take the lead.
Darius Wilson returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to give the lead back to the Cru and UMHB closed out the game on a 21-6 run.
UMHB is 1-0 on the year after topping Wisconsin-La Crosse 27-20 last week. The Cru is also ranked third in the nation by D3football.com. McMurry is 1-1 on the year after opening the season against a pair of Division I opponents.
