Belton, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team broke the game open early in the first half and the Cru never looked back on the way to a 74-53 victory over Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The 8
th-ranked UMHB men improve to 15-0 overall and 11-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 6-9 overall and 5-6 in the ASC on the year.
Texas Lutheran led 5-4 in the very early going, but UMHB erupted for a 15-2 run to push the lead to double figures at 19-7 with 11:05 left in the first half. The Cru took its biggest lead of the half at 39-18 at halftime. TLU scored the first basket of the second half, but that's as close as it would get. UMHB led by as many as 29 points before the Bulldogs closed the gap with Cru reserves on the floor late.
Marlon Miller led a balanced UMHB scoring attack with 13 points and
Brian Todd added 12.
Sterling Phillips also reached double figures with 10 points for the Cru.
Greg Wiernas had nine points and nine rebounds and
Sheldon Jones pulled down a career-high eight boards. UMHB shot 61 percent from the field in the first half and finished at 52 percent for the game. The Cru also out rebounded TLU 47-30 and went 5-11 from three-point range.
Isaac Williams topped the Bulldogs with 12 points off the bench. Michael Flores and Jarell English added 11 points apiece for TLU. The Bulldogs shot just 21 percent from the floor in the first half and 26 percent for the game. TLU was 3-12 from beyond the arc.
The UMHB men are one of just five remaining unbeaten among the 405 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball programs in the country. The Cru will now travel to Abilene for a pair of crucial ASC West Division road games next week. UMHB will face second-place Hardin-Simmons University in a 7:30 PM tip-off on Thursday before closing out the week with a 3:00 PM start against McMurry University next Saturday.
