BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first half over Concordia Texas and held off a strong second-half offensive surge by the Tornados to win the match 2-0. The Cru improves to 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Tornados fall to 2-8-1 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play.
UMHB took an early lead when Tyler Pate scored off an assist from John Williams in the fifth minute of play. Julio Espinosa put the Cru on the board again with 9:15 left in the half off a penalty kick. The UMHB defense fought off a second-half surge from the Tornados to end the game at 2-0. Concordia Texas took eight shots in the second half, compared to UMHB's four. The Cru recorded nine total shots in the match, with Pate taking a game-high four shots. Brandon Stegmeyer played the entire match in the goal for the Cru, recording six saves. The Tornados took 14 shots and two corner kicks in the match.
The Cru will return to action with a 7:00 PM non-conference match at Trinity University on Sunday. The UMHB men will then return home next weekend for conference matches against Texas-Dallas at 3 p.m. on Friday and Ozarks at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
