Georgetown, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team grabbed an early lead and then held off Southwestern's late rally to post a 5-3 win in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon in Georgetown. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called due to rain with the teams tied at two after four innings. That game and the individual statistics will not count since it was called before becoming an official game. The Cru is now 1-0 to start the season, while the Pirates open the year at 0-1.
UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead when
Victoria Gomez led off the top of the second inning with a home run. The Cru stretched the lead to 2-0 when
Caitlin Bollier singled home a run in the top of the sixth. UMHB was unable to add to the lead, leaving the bases loaded in that frame. Southwestern cut it to 2-1 on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. UMHB added some breathing room in the top of the seventh when
Dayton Kunz scored on a wild pitch and Gomez doubled home two more runs. Tessa Galloway blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to cut the gap to 5-3, but UMHB's
Rebekah Ragsdale pitched her way out of it to nail down the win. Ragsdale scattered 11 hits and allowed three runs in seven innings to pick up her first win for the Cru. She struck out six and walked just one. Gomez and Bollier had three hits apiece for UMHB and Gomez finished with three runs batted in. Lauren Zearfoss took the loss in the circle for the Pirates.
UMHB took an early lead in game two, scoring in the top of the second. Southwestern battled back for a 2-1 lead before
Hannah White singled home the tying run in the top of the fourth. Southwestern went scoreless in the bottom of the fourth before the rain hit, ending the game and wiping out the stats.
The Cru will now return to action with a doubleheader at U.T.-Tyler on Monday at 4:00 PM. That doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was moved due to the threat of rain in East Texas.
