Richardson, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball opened the 2012 season in style, sweeping a pair of matches at the U.T.-Dallas Labor Day Tournament in Richardson on Friday. The Cru opened with a 3-0 victory over Centenary College before beating Texas Lutheran 3-2 to close out the opening day of the year.
UMHB topped Centenary 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 in the first match of the day. The Cru used an 8-1 run to open the first set and cruised from there.
Tina Miller led UMHB with 12 kills and
Kendall Pye added 10 more.
Shelby Prather added 37 assists and
Elise Butler had a team-high 11 digs. The Cru hit .354 as a team and added five service aces in the victory.
UMHB saw an early lead slip away in the second match before battling back for a 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 18-25, 15-8 win over Texas Lutheran University. Miller again led the way for the Cru with 18 kills and Pye chipped in 14 kills. Prather's 46 assists topped UMHB and
Morgan Baker led four players in double figures with 26 digs. The Cru hit .169 as a team and totaled 16 team blocks in the victory.
The Cru will close out the tournament with two more matches tomorrow. UMHB will face Hendrix College at 10:00 AM before closing out the tournament with a 5:00 PM start against Hardin-Simmons. The Cru will then return to action with a trip to the U.T.-Tyler Tournament next weekend.
