Alpine, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will open defense of its American Southwest Conference Championship when the Cru kicks off ASC play this Saturday at Sul Ross State University. The two teams will kick off at 1:00 PM at Jackson Field in Alpine. UMHB is 3-0 on the season and ranked #2 in the country in both major national polls. The Lobos are 1-2 on the year, but the two losses came against NCAA Division II opponents and Sul Ross has had an extra week to prepare for the Cru after rolling over Trinity University 62-35 two weeks ago in Alpine. UMHB has never lost to the Lobos and only two of the previous 14 meetings between the two teams have been decided by less than 20 points. But the win over Trinity, coupled with the Lobos' high-powered offense certainly has the attention of the Cru this season.
“It is a tough place to go play any way and something strange always seems to happen when we go out there,” Cru head coach
Pete Fredenburg said. “And they have some very talented playmakers on offense. We think they are doing some very smart things on that side of the ball and we do not want to get into a shootout with them. We need to work hard as coaches to make sure our players are ready on Saturday and we need to be focused every week if we are going to reach the goals we have set as a team.”
The UMHB football team will also put a 27-game regular season winning streak and a 19-game ASC winning streak on the line in Saturday's game. The game will be broadcast locally on KTEM 1400 AM with the pre-game show starting at 12:30 PM. The Cru athletic department will also offer free live video streaming of the game and Sul Ross State will provide live statistics.
