Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team will begin play in the NCAA Division III National Championships with a 2 p.m. match against Southwestern University Friday afternoon on the campus of Trinity University in San Antonio. This is the first NCAA postseason appearance for the UMHB volleyball program. UMHB earned an at-large bid to the championships following a 29-7 season.
The Cru will compete in regional competition with American Southwest Conference foes Hardin-Simmons University and the University of Texas at Dallas. First Round matches will be played Friday, followed by two Second Round matches on Saturday and the Third Round match on Sunday. Hardin-Simmons (23-15) earned the league's automatic bid following an ASC championship last weekend and will be making its fifth appearance in the championships while Texas-Dallas was an at-large selection with a 30-8 season record and will make its third trip to the NCAA postseason. Hardin-Simmons will face Cal Lutheran in the First Round at 4:30 p.m. Friday while Texas-Dallas will face Pomona-Pitzer at 11:30 a.m. Regional-host Trinity University will close the day with a 7 p.m. match against UC Santa Cruz.
The winner of UMHB and Southwestern will advance to face the winner of UC Santa Cruz and Trinity at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16
th while the winner of Hardin-Simmons and Cal Lutheran will advance to face the winner of Texas-Dallas and Pomona Pitzer at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner of those matches will advance to the Third Round match Sunday, Nov. 17
th at 4 p.m.
UMHB is 2-0 against Southwestern this season and has also earned wins over Hardin-Simmons, Texas-Dallas and Trinity this season. UMHB's 29 wins surpassed 2013's 22 wins for a program-record wins in a season. The Cru also earned votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll for the first time in program history.
