Men's Basketball falls to Sul Ross State 74-70

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team battled back from a big first-half deficit to take a seven-point second-half lead, but the 11th-ranked Cru could not hold on in a 74-70 loss to Sul Ross State Thursday night in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in American Southwest Conference play. The Lobos improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in ASC play with the victory.

Sul Ross State scored the game's first five points and built an early 12-4 lead. The Cru would trail 29-17 with 3:09 remaining in the first half before Jerard Graham's jumper and three straight Antonie Chaney three-pointers, the last one coming at the buzzer, pulled UMHB to within 29-28 at halftime. The Cru took its first lead of the game at 32-31 and pushed the lead to seven on two occasions, the last coming at 54-47 with 9:23 left to play. The Lobos answered to tie it at 60-60 and the two teams would trade the lead until another Chaney jumper tied it at 70 with 2:19 on the clock. Percy Settle would pull down a big offensive rebound for the Lobos and his put back gave Sul Ross a 72-70 lead with 1:08 left. UMHB turned the ball over on its next possession and Trey Richardson iced the game with two free throws with four seconds left to go.

Chaney finished with a game-high 24 points and he hit 5-10 from three-point range. Graham chippd in 17 points and Kitrick Bell added 12 points. UMHB was just 11-24 from the free-throw line, but hit 51 percent from the field in the game.

Mychal Pinson led the Lobos with 18 points on 8-13 shooting. Settle scored 17 points and Richardson poured in 16 on 5-7 shooting. Sul Ross shot 47 per cent from the field and went 8-11 from the stripe. The Lobos also out rebounded UMHB 33-30 in the victory.

The Cru will continue its home stand with a 6:30 PM tip-off against Howard Payne University. That will be the second-half of a women's-men's doubleheader and the start time has been pushed back from the originally scheduled 3:00 PM.
