Men's Soccer Wins Opener 2-1

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team overcame a first-half deficit to win its season opener 2-1. The Cru opens the season at 1-0 while Schreiner begins at 0-1.

Justin Edwards gave Schreiner an early 1-0 lead with a chip for a goal in the 13th minute. The Mountaineers held until the second half, when John Williams tied the game off a goal from the right side in the 53rd minute. Jonathan Hernandez gave the Cru a 2-1 lead and eventually the win in the 58th minute off a converted penalty kick.

UMHB outshot Schreiner 13-8 in the match with Hernandez recording four shots and Williams adding three. Blake Lander earned the win in the goal for the Cru, recording one save and allowing just one goal. UMHB took two corner kicks in the match and allowed none.

The Cru will return to action tomorrow with a 6 p.m. match against Millsaps in Tyler. UMHB will return home Friday, Sept. 13th for a 7 p.m. match against Southwestern Christian University.
