Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to win three straight sets to post a 3-2 victory over Southwestern University in the finale of the opening day of the UMHB Volleyball Classic. The Cru opened the day with a 3-0 win over Huston-Tillotson to go 2-0 on the season's opening day.
UMHB rallied for an 18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 31-29, 15-13 win over Southwestern to close out the first day of the tournament. The Cru lost the first two set before seizing momentum with the third set victory. UMHB would hold off four match points to claim the fourth set. The Cru built a 13-11 lead in the deciding set before Southwestern rallied to tie it at 13. UMHB would close it out with the final two points in front of a raucous crowd.
Lauren Powell topped the Cru with 22 kills and she also recorded 12 digs.
Sarah Toler added 12 kills and
Cheyenne Dowdey posted 11.
Shelby Prather had 54 assists and 12 digs and
Kendra Feldmann led UMHB with 36 digs. The Cru also had nine team blocks in the match.
UMHB controlled the match early and rolled to a 25-10, 25-20, 25-12 win over Huston-Tillotson. The Cru hit .341 as a team and added nine service aces.
Bianca Patterson led the way with 13 kills and Powell chipped in ten more to go with 12 digs and four service aces. Prather also notched four service aces to go with 30 assists. Feldmann also reached double figures with 12 digs in the win.
UMHB will close out the home tournament with two more matches on Saturday. The Cru will face Trinity University in a 12:30 PM start to open the day. UMHB will then close out the tournament with a 4:30 PM start against Wayland Baptist. Both of those teams also went 2-0 on the opening day of the tournament.
