Union, NJ— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football shook off a sluggish first half to dominate the second half as the Cru rolled to a 34-7 victory over Kean University Saturday in New Jersey. UMHB improves to 2-0 on the season with the win while Kean drops to 0-2.
The Cru drew first blood when
Drew Owen nailed a 41-yard field goal on UMHB's opening possession to make it 3-0 with 9:39 remaining in the first quarter. Both defenses took over from there and it would stay 3-0 into halftime. The Cru broke things open in the second half. Reserve quarterback
Zach Anderson engineered an 11-play, 75-yard drive and capped it with a four-yard scoring run to make it 10-0 UMHB with 11:40 left in the third quarter.
Brodrick Crain intercepted a Kean pass to set up the Cru's next possession at the Cougar 20-yard line. Anderson found
Elijah Hudson with a 20-yard scoring strike on the next play to make it 17-0 UMHB. The Cougars only scoring would come when Damian Corredor returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 17-7. Anderson would find
Kamray Runnels with a four-yard TD toss on the next drive to give the Cru a 24-7 edge. Anderson added a seven-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Murphy midway through the fourth quarter and Owen kicked a 35-yard field goal to close out the scoring.
The UMHB defense held Kean to just 43 rushing yards and 125 yards of total offense. The Cru also forced five turnovers and posted six sacks. UMHB rolled up 425 yards of total offense with 230 of those coming on the ground.
Anderson finished the game 12-14 passing for 161 yards and three touchdowns in the first varsity action of his career. He also ran for 29 yards and a TD on eight carries. Hudson ran for 154 yards on 23 carries and added the touchdown grab.
Keith Reineke had a team-high five catches for 30 yards and Runnels added four catches for 40 yards and a score.
Deshon Kinsey had a team-high 10 tackles and
Korey Steward had 2.5 tackles for loss.
Christian Bailoni was 11-22 passing for 82 yards for Kean and Sean McKee ran for 48 yards on 14 attempts. Troy Chavers and Prince Stewart had four receptions apiece.
UMHB will now return home to host the first game in Crusader Stadium next Saturday. Wesley College (2-0) will be the opponent for a 6:00 PM kickoff. The game will be the ninth overall meeting between the two teams and also matches unbeatens in a showdown of teams ranked in the top five nationally in the D3football.com Top 25 Poll.
