Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team opened American Southwest Conference action with two wins Saturday in Austin. The Cru improves to 13-2 on the season and 2-0 in ASC action with a 3-0 win over Sul Ross State and a 3-1 victory against Concordia.
UMHB dominated Sul Ross State 25-7, 25-21, 25-8 in the first match of the day. UMHB used a 9-0 run in the first set to grab a 14-7 advantage on the Lobos, then closed out the set with 11 consecutive points for the win. The second set proved more competitive, but UMHB was able to hold a steady lead and close the set with a victory. UMHB again dominated the third set for the three-set sweep.
Lauren Powell and
Cheyenne Dowdey led the Cru with eight kills each while
Bianca Patterson added six.
Shelby Prather had a match high 30 assists. Defensively, Powell led the Cru with nine digs while Patterson recorded five blocks. UMHB hit 35 kills on 80 total attacks and had 7 team blocks.
The Cru closed out the day with a 25-14, 24-16, 25-18, 25-10 win over Concordia. The Cru opened the first set with a 5-0 run to gain an early advantage and held that lead throughout the set. Concordia took advantage of a slow second set, before UMHB rebounded with an 8-1 run to open the third set and finished off the Tornados in four. Powell led the Cru with 15 kills while Patterson added 13.
Shelby Prather assisted 40 kills while
Kendall Pye added nine. Keldmann recorded 18 digs with Prather and Pye each adding 16. Dowdey was the Cru's leading blocker with one block solo and five block assists.
UMHB will return to action next weekend with conference matches in Alpine. UMHB will face Howard Payne University Friday, Sept. 27th at 1 p.m. then play matches against Texas-Dallas and Hardin-Simmons Saturday, Sept. 28th.
