Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team defeated both Texas-Dallas and Hardin-Simmons 3-2 in Alpine Saturday afternoon. The Cru advances to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play. UMHB is the only remaining undefeated team in the American Southwest Conference.
The Cru took an early lead on the Comets, taking the first set 25-19. Texas-Dallas responded with a second-set 10-25 victory before UMHB rallied for a third-set 25-21 victory. The Comets responded again with a 25-12 win in the fourth set, forcing a fifth set. The Cru took control of the deciding set early and fought off a late offensive surge by the Comets, earning a 15-13 set victory and 3-2 match win.
Lauren Powell and
Abby Voskuil led the Cru with eight kills each while
Cheyenne Dowdey added seven.
Kendall Pye led the Cru with 20 assists while
Shelby Prather added 19. Defensively,
Kendra Feldmann led the Cru with 19 digs. Pye added 18, Powell had 16 and Voskuil recorded 14.
Katrina Kastmo led the Cru with four solo blocks in route to a team 19. UMHB totaled 40 kills on 179 total attacks.
UMHB responded with a 3-2 win over Hardin-Simmons. It was the first program win over the Cowgirls since Oct. 28, 2005. UMHB fell 25-27 in the first set but responded with a 28-26 second-set victory. The Cowgirls took the third set 25-20 but the Cru forced a fourth set with a 25-20 victory and won the deciding set 15-10. Pye led the Cru with 15 kills while Dowdey added nine. Prather led the Cru with 24 assists with Pye adding 18. Voskuil led the Cru with 19 digs, followed by Feldmann with 18 and Pye with 17. Dowdey was the leading blocker, putting down four solo blocks and three block assists. UMHB totaled 49 kills and 13.5 team blocks.
The Cru will return to action next weekend with conference matches in Marshall. UMHB opens the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against the University of Texas at Tyler on the campus of East Texas Baptist University on Friday, Oct. 4th.
