Redlands, CA – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team controlled the first half and used a dominating performance from
Elijah Hudson to post a 31-13 victory over the University of Redlands Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. UMHB has now won 35 consecutive regular season games following the victory. The Cru also stretched its regular season road game winning streak to 18 in a row.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring with Kevin Grady's 21-yard field goal following a Cru fumble with 5:33 left in the opening quarter. UMHB answered with
Malcolm Miller's one-yard scoring plunge on the ensuing drive for a 7-3 lead with 2:26 left to play in the first.
Jake Sims scored on a four-yard run on the next UMHB possession to give the Cru a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter and Hudson's eight-yard TD run with 4:17 remaining in the first half put UMHB up 21-3. Grady hit a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to make it 21-6 Cru at halftime. UMHB used
Drew Owen's 28-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 24-6 on the opening possession of the second half and
Caleb Moore's 20-yard scoring run pushed the Cru lead to 31-6 with 5:06 left in the third quarter. UMHB was driving for another score, but fumbled the ball away on the Redlands one-yard line. Mitch Samson hit Taylor Irwin with a 99-yard scoring strike on the next play to pull the Bulldogs to within 31-13, but that's as close as it would get.
Hudson ran for 184 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries to lead the Cru. Sims threw for 209 yards on an 18-26 night in his first collegiate start at quarterback for UMHB.
Baylor Mullins intercepted two passes and
Teidrick Smith had 11 tackles to lead the Cru defense. UMHB posted 395 rushing yards and rolled up 604 total yards of offense in the game. The Cru also held Redlands to 35 rushing yards and 308 yards of total offense in the win. UMHB turned the ball over four times and was flagged for 11 penalties, but the Cru defense posted five sacks and intercepted three passes.
UMHB will now travel to the East Coast to face Kean University in a 12:00 PM Central Time kickoff next Saturday. The Cougars fell to Albright 30-14 in their season opener on Saturday.
