Men's Basketball edged by Sul Ross State in overtime

Alpine, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team erased a four-point deficit in the final minute to get the game to overtime, but the Cru ran out of gas in the extra session in an 83-77 loss at Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Alpine. The loss drops the UMHB men to 9-8 overall and 7-7 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Lobos improve to 8-9 overall and 7-7 in the ASC with the victory to complete a sweep of the regular-season series with UMHB.

The first half was a see-saw affair with the two teams trading the lead until Sul Ross State closed with an 8-0 run to take a 39-30 lead at halftime. A three-pointer to open the second half pushed the Lobo lead to 12 and Sul Ross would still hold a 44-34 lead with 16:38 left in the second half. The Cru battled back and took a 54-53 lead on two Antonie Chaney free throws. UMHB would stretch the lead to 67-61 with 3:27 to go, but the Lobos responded to take a 74-70 lead on Mychal Pinson's three-point play with 1:17 remaining. James Allen wrapped four free throws around a big defensive stop and his last two free throws tied it at 74-74 with ten seconds on the clock. The Lobos missed a pair of potential game winning shots to send the game to overtime. Allen's free throw provided the opening points of the overtime, but Sul Ross scored the next five points. UMHB fought back to within two, but Pinson closed it out with two free throws and a lay-in in the final minute of play.

Allen led UMHB with 21 points and he went 11-14 from the free-throw line. Jerard Graham added 18 points and nine rebounds and Kitrick Bell posted a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 boards. Chaney also reached double figures with 13 points before leaving the game late in the second half with an injury. The Cru shot 44 percent from the field as a team but went just 1-15 from three-point range. UMHB did not score from the field in overtime, with all three points coming from the stripe.

Pinson led all scorers with 32 for the Lobos. Percy Settle chipped in 19 points and seven rebounds and Trey Richardson added 12 points off the bench for Sul Ross. The Lobos shot 44 percent from the field as a team and went 8-27 from beyond the arc.

The Cru men will now return home to close out the regular season by playing six of the final eight games at the Mayborn Campus Center. That stretch begins with a 7:30 PM tip-off against Louisiana College next Thursday in Belton.
