Men's Soccer beats Howard Payne 3-1

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team defeated Howard Payne 3-1 Saturday night in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 5-5-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in American Southwest Conference play while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in conference action.
 
UMHB started the contest off strong, scoring 20 seconds into the game when Case Carnes found Colby Case in front of the goal for the Cru. Jacob Moore evened for Howard Payne in the 23rd minute with an assist from Alex Sanchez. Julio Mar, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, gave UMHB the advantage in the 60th minute, heading the ball into the back of the net off a cross from John Williams. Williams scored one of his own in the 63rd minute off a double assist from Mar and Carnes. Neither team was able to score again, giving UMHB the 3-1 victory.

Case and Ben Hammonds led the Cru with four shots each while Williams added three. UMHB recorded 19 shots in the contest and limited the Yellow Jackets to 14. UMHB took nine corner kicks to Howard Payne's two. Javier Zaragoza earned the win in the net for UMHB, making five saves and allowing one goal. Brice Gardner took the loss for Howard Payne, making seven saves and allowing three goals.
 
UMHB returns to action Friday, October 24th in a 6 p.m. match at LeTourneau University in Longview.
