Soccer to open play in ASC Championship Tournament on Thursday

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team will open postseason play in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday in Richardson. The 2014 ASC Championship Tournament will run Thursday, Nov. 6th – Sunday, Nov. 9th on the campus of the University of Texas at Dallas. UMHB earned the No. 4 seed and will enter the tournament at 7-6-3 on the season and 4-2-3 in ASC action.
 
The Cru will open the tournament with a first-round match against No. 5 U.T.-Tyler on Thursday, Nov. 6th at 11 a.m. The winner of that match will advance to face No. 1 U.T.-Dallas on Saturday, Nov. 8th at 11 a.m. The championship match will be played on Sunday, Nov. 10th at 1 p.m. with the winner of that match receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. UMHB posted a 3-1-1 record against other teams in the field, earning wins over No. 5 U.T.-Tyler, No. 6 Howard Payne and No. 3 Ozarks.
 
"We are excited to make it back to the conference tournament this year," Cru head coach Brad Bankhead said. "I am proud of the way our guys have played these last few weeks. We have momentum going into the tournament and I am confident in our team."
 
Bankhead returns 17 athletes from last year's squad, including an experienced group of upperclassmen. Seniors Isaiah Minick and Mikey Briggs lead a Cru backline that has allowed just 21 goals this season, recording five shutouts. John Williams is a dual threat for the Cru, playing defense for UMHB but also recording a team-high four assists this season while junior Ben Hammonds leads the Cru in shots (34) and has four goals on the season.
 
UMHB also boasts a talented set of underclassmen this season. Freshman Case Carnes leads the Cru with five goals this season while sophomore Julio Mar has four and sophomore McKenna Cook has three. UMHB's underclassmen have a combined 17 goals and 11 assists on the season.
