Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team will open postseason play in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday in Abilene. The 2014 ASC Championship Tournament will run Thursday, Nov. 6
th – Sunday, Nov. 9
th on the campus of the Hardin-Simmons University. UMHB earned the No. 3 seed and will enter the tournament at 9-4-2 on the season and 6-1-2 in ASC action.
The Cru will open the tournament with a first-round match against No. 6 Howard Payne on Thursday, Nov. 6
th at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will advance to face No. 2 U.T.-Tyler on Saturday, Nov. 8
th at 2 p.m. The championship match will be played on Sunday, Nov. 10
th at 1 p.m. with the winner of that match receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. UMHB posted a 2-1-2 record against other teams in the field, earning wins over 5 Concordia Texas and No. 4 U.T.-Dallas.
"We are excited to make the tournament back-to-back seasons," Cru head coach
Barry Elkins said. "We still have a young team, but the postseason experience we gained last year will play to our advantage this year."
Elkins returns 16 members from last year's squad, including the Cru's leading-scorer
Kathryn Parker. Parker has nine goals on the season and currently leads the ASC in assists this season with 10.
Kristen Hoelscher and
Briana Hester also return to the Cru's offense, scoring a combined 11 goals this season, including three game-winning goals. Defensively,
Charis Brantley returns to anchor a Cru backline that has allowed just 14 goals on the season while
Courtney Craig continues to be dominant in the net, recording seven wins in the goal for UMHB.
The Cru also welcomed a strong group of freshman this year, including forward
Cameron Shivers and midfielder
Sarah Rempe. Shivers has seven goals on the season, including three game-winning goals for UMHB. Rempe is an anchor in the Cru's midfield, recording five assists on the season.
Bailee Boren and
Amanda Carlough also play strong roles in UMHB's midfield and contribute to an offense that has outscored opponents 37-14 this season.
