ASC VB Tournament: U.T.-Dallas sweeps Hardin-Simmons 3-0 in First Round

BELTON, Texas – The University of Texas at Dallas won its first-round match in the 2014 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, beating Hardin-Simmons University 3-0. The win improved the Comets to 20-9 while the Cowgirls fell to 9-17.  
 
U.T.-Dallas won the match with consecutive 25-14, 25-15, 27-25 set victories. Holyn Handley led the Comets with 12 kills while Meredith Crawford added ten. Kayla Jordan recorded 40 assists in the contest. Defensively for the Comets, Bethany Werner had a match-high 17 digs while Michelle Toro recorded eight block assists. UTD hit 45 kills on 118 total attacks for a .271 hitting percentage.
 
For the Cowgirls, Hannah Hornsby led the team with eight kills while Corrie Reeder and Raygan McLelland each hit seven. Hayley Walton added 19 assists with Molli Owen recording ten. Defensively, Lauren Wish led Hardin-Simmons with 15 digs and Reeder had five block assists. Hardin-Simmons hit 33 kills on 124 attacks for a .056 percentage.
 
U.T.-Dallas will advance to the second round to face No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist University at 5 p.m.  Hardin-Simmons moves to the loser's bracket and will face the winner of Game 4. Game 4 will be played tonight at 7:30 p.m. and feature No. 1 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor against the winner of No. 4 U.T.-Tyler and No. 5 Concordia Texas.
