BELTON, Texas – No. 6 Hardin-Simmons University defeated No. 4 University of Texas at Tyler 3-1 Thursday afternoon in an elimination match of the 2014 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament. The Cowgirls grabbed a 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 25-19 win over the Patriots to advance in the tournament.
Hannah Hornsby led the Cowgirls with 14 kills while Corrie Reeder added 13. Molli Owen had a team-high 21 assists with Hayley Walton adding 20. In the Cowgirls' defense, Lauren Wish recorded a team-high 19 digs followed by Walton with 18 and Raygan McLelland with 13. Hardin-Simmons recorded 16 team blocks in the match, led by Morgan Watts with 13 and Hornsby with nine. The Cowgirls hit 50 kills on 173 attempts for a .116 hitting percentage, adding 81 digs as a team.
Courtney Criswell led the Patriots with 13 kills while Rebekah Maner added 11. Rebecca Floyd had a match-high 33 assists while Shabrondra Prox led the Patriots with 30 digs. U.T.-Tyler recorded eight team blocks, led by Amanda Colegrove with five. The Patriots hit 43 kills on 167 attempts for a .096 percentage as a team. U.T.-Tyler added 83 digs and eight team blocks in the match.
No. 6 Hardin-Simmons will advance to face the winner of No. 5 Concordia Texas and No. 2 East Texas Baptist in an elimination game on Friday, Nov. 7th at 7:30 p.m. U.T.-Tyler ends its season at 16-14.
