BELTON, Texas – No. 2 East Texas Baptist University beat No. 6 Hardin-Simmons University 3-1 Friday evening in an elimination match in the 2014 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament. ETBU defeated the Cowgirls 25-14, 25-18, 19-25, 27-25 to improve to 17-11 on the season.
Mallory Sanders led ETBU with 17 kills in the match, followed by Danielle Miller with nine. Kayla Taylor had a match-high 36 assists, helping the Tigers hit 48 kills on 150 total attacks for a .187 team hitting percentage in the match. For the ETBU defense, Hannah Jones recorded 23 digs while Taylor added 14. Adaeze Elonu blocked a match-high eight attacks, helping the Tigers to 12.5 team blocks.
Hannah Hornsby and Corrie Reeder led the Cowgirls with 17 kills each. Haley Walton and Molli Owen both recorded 21 assists, helping Hardin-Simmons to 49 kills for a .085 hitting percentage. For the Cowgirl defense, Lauren Wish led the team with 23 digs with Raygan McLelland adding 11. ETBU totaled 69 digs and six team blocks in the match.
No. 2 East Texas Baptist will advance to face No. 3 U.T.-Dallas on Saturday, Nov. 8th in an elimination match at 12 p.m. The winner of that match advances to face No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3 p.m. in the 2014 ASC Volleyball Championship. No. 6 Hardin-Simmons ends its season at 10-18.
