Women's Basketball falls to Sam Houston State in exhibition game

Huntsville, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team kept it close in the first half before Sam Houston State pulled away in the second as the Cru fell to the Division I Bearkats 85-67 in exhibition play Saturday night in Huntsville. UMHB led or was tied for 19:52 before Sam Houston State was able to pull away in the second half.

 

The Cru built an early 10-point lead at 18-8 and still led 30-29 with 3:14 left in the first half. Sam Houston closed the half with an 8-4 run to take a 37-34 edge into halftime. UMHB would go cold from the field in the second half while the Bearkats were heating up. The Cru tied the game at 41 before Sam Houston used a 14-5 run to build a nine-point lead. Sam Houston State then pulled away late in the game to stretch it to the final margin.

 

Alyssa Dean topped UMHB with 16 points off the bench and Taylor Tucker added 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Macy Moore and Jonelle Smith were also both in double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively. The Cru shot just 31 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range. UMHB turned the ball over 24 times in the game.

 

Taylor Dorsey led Sam Houston State with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Amanda Barnes added 22 points and she hit 4-8 from three-point range. The Bearkats shot 52 percent in the second half and hit 46 percent for the game. Sam Houston State also hit 7-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.

 

The two teams combined for 56 fouls and 43 turnovers. They also combined to shoot 65 free throws, making a combined 44 of those.

 

The UMHB women will open the regular season next Saturday with a 2:00 PM start at Austin College in Sherman. The Cru will return home to host Texas Lutheran University in the home opener at 6:00 PM on Saturday, November 22nd.
