Women's Basketball rolls past Sul Ross 77-60

Cru improves to 5-1 with victory

Alpine, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team weathered a first-half dry spell to slowly pull away and the Cru rolled to a 77-60 victory over Sul Ross State Saturday in Alpine. The UMHB women improve to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in ASC play on the year.

 

The Cru led 3-2 a minute and a half into the game, but neither team scored again for more than three minutes. The Lobos actually took a 7-5 lead and the game was tied at 17-17 before UMHB used a 15-0 run to take control of the contest. The Cru led 37-27 at halftime. Sul Ross would fight back to within three points at 41-38 in the second half, but UMHB stretched it out from there. The Cru would lead by as many as 20 before cruising to the win.

 

Taylor Tucker led a balanced UMHB scoring effort with 14 points and she also had a team-high nine rebounds. Alyssa Dean had 13 points and eight boards and Jonelle Smith and Meghan Turner added 11 points apiece. The Cru shot 42 per cent from the field and out rebounded Sul Ross 50-32 in the victory.

 

Miranda Roberts led all scorers with 25 points for the Lobos and she hit 7-13 from three-point range. Amanda Garza had 12 points and nine rebounds. Sul Ross shot 39.7 per cent from the field and was 7-22 from beyond the arc.

 

The Cru women will now return home and take a week off for finals. UMHB will return to play with a 1:00 PM start against Concordia Texas at the Mayborn Campus Center next Saturday. The Cru will host Louisiana College for a 5:30 PM tip off on Thursday, December 18th.
