Softball drops doubleheader to Mississippi College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLINTON, Miss. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team continued its season-opening series against Mississippi College Sunday afternoon, dropping two contests to the Choctaws. The Cru moved to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in American Southwest Conference action while the Choctaws improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
 
The Choctaws used a powerful fourth inning in the day's opening game to grab a lead on the Cru. Mississippi College batted in four runs off three RBI singles to gain a 4-0 advantage. The Cru responded in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single to right field from Tori Gomez, scoring Janie Neyland who reached on a fielder's choice. UMHB was unable to generate any additional offense and fell to the Choctaws 4-1. Freshman Haley Parker took the loss in the circle in her first outing for the Cru, allowing seven hits and four runs with one strikeout. Halle Sabo came in for Parker, pitching 2.1 innings allowing no hits in eight batters faced. UMHB totaled six hits, led by Leah Brown and Faith Escobar with two each. Mississippi College recorded seven hits and one error while UMHB noted two errors.


Mississippi College jumped to an early lead in the second contest of the day, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. The Choctaws held that lead until the bottom of the sixth when they added an insurance run for a 3-0 victory. Halle Sabo took the loss in the circle, allowing three hits and three runs with three strikeouts. UMHB totaled two hits, one apiece from Brown and Kelsey Vann, and committed three errors. The American Southwest Conference only recognized the first three games as conference play.
 
UMHB opens the home season with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday, February 18th at Dee Dillon Field
