Softball splits home opener with Texas Lutheran

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split its 2014 home opener Tuesday, grabbing a 5-1 victory in the doubleheader's opening game and falling 7-1 in the second contest. The Cru moves to 1-5 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 2-2.

Grace Estes got the Bulldogs on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the third inning, scoring Ashley Jacobsen from second base. Texas Lutheran held that lead until the bottom of the fourth when Kelsey Vann hit an RBI single, scoring Leah Brown from second base to tie the game. UMHB gained a lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Myranda Hinojosa followed by a two RBI double from Tori Gomez. The Cru added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with another RBI from Kelsey Vann scoring Leanne Hinojosa to secure the 5-1 victory. The Cru totaled nine hits and five runs with no errors while the Bulldogs recorded nine hits and one run with one error. Dayton Kunz, Leah Brown and Vann each led the Cru with two hits. Vann and Gomez both recorded two RBI while Myranda Hinojosa added one. Halle Sabo earned the win in the circle, improving to 1-2 on the season. Kimberly Leschber took the loss for the Bulldogs, falling to 1-1.

Haley Parker pitched around a bases-loaded no-out second inning, giving up just one run for a 1-0 Bulldog advantage. Leah Brown responded for the Cru in the bottom of the second with her first collegiate home run, tying the game at 1-1. Texas Lutheran gained another one-run lead in the top of the third before using a power fourth inning to put five more runs on the board. The Bulldogs held that lead for the remaining five innings, grabbing a 7-1 victory over the Cru. Texas Lutheran totaled seven runs on 11 hits and two errors while the Cru had one run on three hits and one error. Brown led the Cru with two hits while Leanne Hinojosa grabbed the third. Haley Parker took the loss in the circle, walking three batters with eight hits and four runs. Samantha Yenne earned her first win for the Bulldogs with two hits and two strikeouts, allowing just one run.

The Cru will return to action Friday, February 21st in a 6 p.m. match against Howard Payne University at Dee Dillon Field. The Cru will then play a doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets Saturday, February 22nd beginning at noon.
