Abilene, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team put together what appeared to be a championship drive in the final five minutes, only to see Hardin-Simmons answer just 48 seconds later as the Cru fell to the Cowboys 29-26 Saturday in Abilene. The loss drops UMHB to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in American Southwest-Conference play. The defeat also snaps the Cru's 61-game regular season win streak, a 39-game ASC win streak and a stretch of 13 consecutive wins over HSU. The Cowboys improve to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the ASC with the victory.
UMHB trailed 22-19 with 7:36 left in the fourth quarter after Kerry Sloan's five-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion for the Cowboys. UMHB would march 78 yards in nine plays before Marcus Wimby scored on a two-yard run to give the Cru a 26-22 lead with 4:00 to go. Hardin-Simmons responded just three plays later when Ryan Breton found Jessie Ramos streaking up the sideline for a 57-yard touchdown pass to put the Cowboys back on top 29-26. UMHB's final drive would end with a turnover on downs following an HSU sack and the Cowboys killed the clock to clinch the victory. The Cru led 9-7 at halftime on Malcolm Miller's 11-yard TD run and Jacob O'Neill's 37-yard field goal. Breton hit Ramos from 25 yards out for the Cowboys' only points of the first half. HSU took the opening drive of the second half, converting a fake field goal on the way, and took a 14-9 lead on Sloan's two-yard run. O'Neill kicked a 27-yard field after a blocked punt and Miller scored on a 14-yard run after a big punt return to give UMHB a 19-14 lead.
